The LEGO Movie used everything it had, including that same plucky, optimistic Everyman, family theming, and threw in some notes about growing up thrown in for good measure, so it has heart. ![]() In other words, things that many gamers can relate to. The stage was set for themes about family, the value of escapism in the endless treadmill world we've built for ourselves, and even something about approval not being the be-all-end-all. They then come into their own before ultimately saving the city, earning the approval of their family, and setting themselves up for future success. The first movie laid all the pieces for a proper plot: a down-on-their-luck pair of handyman brothers whose plucky optimism runs headfirst into a lack of support from their families are whisked away into a magical world. The second movie doesn't need to be a 90-minute commercial for all things Mario, so I think it'll at least be an improvement. I don't want those Nintendo references to be stripped, but I think there's a way to make them meaningful. In general, if the sequel wants to be a better movie, it needs to be less about just being a nostalgia trip and be a bit more focused. is going to show up - that feels like a natural evolution of Bowser's character. Just don't give Yoshi a voice, goodness me. I'd honestly love it if Mario and crew went to Dinosaur Land for the sequel. So Yoshi has to show up, right? I know the dinosaurs show up briefly in the first movie, but I'm talking about the Yoshi - green body, orange boots, etc. We have had our reference-filled colour fest and we've all got to grips with the characters, now can we please have just a bit of plot? Maybe some restraint on the needle drops too? I'm asking for too much now, aren't I?
